Building Home
I took a trip home to see family this week. It’s funny how a place can get under your skin. Even though I haven’t been back in six, almost seven, years now, it felt like home. The airport, the freeway, the neighborhood where I used to own a house, even driving around, the Treasure Valley is my home.
Even though I’m considered a resident of a state and own a house 1600 miles away. My life is here.
Of course this got me thinking about writing. And how my characters are looking for that one elusive concept. Home. A place to feel safe, and loved, and needed.
Okay New Kid readers – here’s the conversation… If you write, do you have themes you return to, like home or redemption…And if you are a reader, what themes in books are you drawn to? What do you want in your books besides the happy ever after?

Interesting question, Lynn. In my romances, I go for hope. LOVE the theme of hope.
In my mysteries, I like the theme of community (friends).
Never realized I had a theme until you asked that question.
Hi Laura - glad you stopped by.
King (yes, Stephen) says that you don't know your theme until after you step back from the writing.
And yeah, you are a hope writer...

When I first started writing, every story took place in Boston somewhere. I've since branched, but I try to bring it back there when I can. :)
Hmm, I've never thought about it before, but I guess I do return to the same theme again and again in what I write. I usually focus on finding acceptance and feeling worthwhile.
Good question, Lynn. I think I see redemption or 'love as redemption' as a theme in my stories so far. (I like King's comment, too, BTW)
But could I identify with your reaction to 'going home.' In my case, there's nostalgia, but things have changed so drastically, I wouldn't want to go back permanently.
Redemption. That's a strong theme. I love that you can mix medieval history with redemption.
I wonder if I would love going home to live as much as I 'think' I would. Maybe for me it was just a reminder of the things that 'built' me.
Thanks for stopping by.
