Inspiration

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I recently decided to rewrite my WIP.  Since then, however, I have been staring at a blank screen.  I haven't been idle; I did some character sketches, and some period research, but every time I thought about writing, I would always find an excuse to do something else.  Two weeks ago I managed to start.  I wrote eight words, then stopped.  Somehow the eight words looked worse than the blank screen (probably because they were a bit reminiscent of "It was a dark and stormy night").  I couldn't get past them, but I couldn't bring myself to delete them, either.

Then, BAM!  I was in the shower one morning this week, and inspiration struck.  Suddenly, the entire story arc popped into my head.  I knew where it started, where it went, what the conflicts were, and how it ended.  This is probably the closest to an epiphany that I will ever get.  Appropriate for an Easter post, I suppose.

I remembered to rinse the shampoo out of my hair, then jumped out of the shower.  I immediately sent myself an email on my Blackberry so I wouldn't forget.  (Yes, I am pathetic. I bring the phone into the bathroom with me when I shower.  At least on this occasion my Crackberry addiction was very handy.)  Then I went to the day job and did other, much less interesting things, my palms literally itching with anticipation. When I finally got a chance to sit down and write, I pounded out 2000 words in one sitting.  Sweet.

Have you ever had a writing epiphany?  What were you doing when inspiration struck?  I'd love to hear.

A very Happy Easter and a Joyous Passover,

Marin

Isn't it wonderful when the muse hits?
I love that moment when clarity and your story come into being.
Great post.
So glad you found your inspiration.

@Sandy - Oh my gosh, it was awesome! I was beginning to feel something close to despair that I would never get this book written, but suddenly it came together. The muse may go on vacation again, I know, but I hope she sticks around for a little while.
@Rebecca - Thanks, and you're welcome. :)

As Natalie Goldberg noted, writers spend a lot of time composting but at an unexpected moment, a flower appears! Keep writing , Marin!

@Kerry, after my Easter bread, I came up with a baking analogy (subject of a future post, perhaps), but gardening works too. :) Thanks!

I was happily writing away in book 2 of my cowboy series when I realized the epilogue in book one moved my dates - by a year.

Ugh.

I actually was walking the dogs when it occured to me I'd messed up.

@Lynn - oops! I hope that it wasn't too much of a chore to fix that error.

I get a lot of good ideas walking the dog. Lots of time to look around and think. :)

Thanks for stopping by!
